I booked three rooms through booking for the 2025 Gnaoua festival and was told by the hotel two weeks before our stay that it would be closed for two weeks, including during the festival. They refused to cancel the reservation despite my repeated messages. Once in Essaouira, I went to the hotel and asked around; everyone said it was open. Someone eventually answered the door and said they were closed because the woman who makes breakfast was sick. That seemed like a poor explanation, especially weeks after they claimed they knew they’d be closed. I strongly advise against booking unless you’re willing to risk being left out on the street. I don’t recommend staying here. I’ve seen other reviews about similar situations, and from what I’ve heard, this may be a recurring problem, perhaps from overbooking or trying to raise prices during busy periods.

The owners greeted us with tea and a wonderful selection of sweets, and were warm, welcoming and generous throughout. Our rooms were clean, bright and spacious, with firm but comfortable beds, nice linen and everything we needed for a good night’s sleep. Breakfast on the terrace was delicious: fresh orange juice, homemade omelettes, pancakes, fresh fruit, breads with assorted spreads, plus tea and coffee. The rooftop has plenty of sunny spots, chairs and lounges. It’s in a very central spot in the Medina. We’ve stayed in a few riads in Morocco, and this was our favorite by far. Highly recommend.

The staff were discreet and still very helpful, and both the room and breakfast were great. Our room was spotless and comfortable. Such a charming riad, full of character. We’d definitely stay again if we came back to Essaouira.

Be careful, don’t book. We’d been really looking forward to our two night stay, but when we arrived they said there was a “problem” with the room. The place was overbooked, and they unfriendly told us to find other accommodation. The owner said, “it happens sometimes, it is not paradise.” After six hours of travel with our bags, we had to find somewhere else. A really bad start to a vacation. I’ve heard from people that this isn’t the first time.
