Jamal and his family made our stay feel like a real gift. They were so welcoming, and spending time with them was lovely. The tea and food were excellent, and I especially enjoyed the sunset and the evening around the bonfire. The surroundings are beautiful, with dunes, palms, and rolling hills to explore on long walks, and the place itself, with its magnificent castle and historic crypt, has a strong sense of history. It’s peaceful and perfect for taking a break. I hope I get to come back someday.

The tent went up among the dunes, and it was just sand, sky, and a few locals waving as they passed on their way somewhere. No quads, buggies, bikes, music, or hawkers. If you want to try desert camping without the touristy side, this is the spot. It's very basic, almost like wild camping, but absolutely worth it. Jamal is a quiet, genuine gentleman who wants people to enjoy his home. He’s around if you need anything.

Sunset and sunrise were beautiful, and it really was just us and the desert. We pitched on the dune, perhaps 300 yards from the entrance. Our bikes could make the track with a little care, and campers can drive it too. The host was kind and humble, and never once pressured us to take a trip. Bring your supplies, since you're right at the edge of a huge open expanse. Beautiful place.

We spent the night under the palms with the van and cycled around the neighborhood in the morning, including a visit to a local Kasbah. Jamal and his cousin later took us out to the desert dunes. We paused for photos of plants and dromedaries, stopped at an Oasis to see the water source, and had tea in the shade. Jamal knows a lot about Saharan life and culture, and it was fascinating to talk with him. The camp has toilets and water, though we didn't need the water since we had our own in the van. Jamal's two dogs were lovely, with the same beautiful energy as their owner. We’d arrived at night and were welcomed with green tea and biscuits, and Jamal explained the area and arranged a desert trip for the next day. After hiking across the dunes for a magnificent sunset, we had a great tajine dinner and heard local live music. When the camp grew quiet, the stargazing was incredible, with a chance to see shooting stars. In the morning we rode dromedaries, watched sunrise, and enjoyed the peaceful dunes. Jamal was a friendly, humble host and a great person. I’d highly recommend a stop here for an authentic, wild, welcoming desert camping experience.

Jamal and his family do everything they can to make you comfortable at their camp in the first dunes of the Sahara. They know and love life in the desert, and can help guide you on activities you ask about. They speak Spanish, English, and French. We shared stories and music, ate delicious food, and slept beneath the most breathtaking sky we’ve ever seen. We’ll definitely see them again. Best wishes!
