Mahakala Center

The dorm was clean and bright, and the center is in a small, peaceful village. The beaches are lovely and reachable, and the center itself is cute. There are kitchen appliances and a winter garden kitchen you can use. The pace of life there felt laidback. I had mixed feelings, though. The first Hostelworld photo shows a private villa on the top floor, which isn't part of the hostel, so there's no roof access. There also weren't yoga or meditation sessions while I was there. It's at least a 15 min walk uphill from the main road and 20-25 min from the beach. Some staff seemed indifferent when I asked questions, and weren't especially helpful or nice. Food and drinks all cost extra except tea, though they did give me coffee on the house more than once and kindly let me print bus tickets.

We had a lovely stay in both the Standard and Superior Sea view rooms, and the views really delivered. I especially enjoyed relaxing by the fireplace in the kitchen and coffee shop. I'm grateful for the experience at Mahakala.

The food at Mahakala Center was the part that surprised me most. Every meal felt carefully made, and the plant-based cooking was some of the best I've had. It was fresh, flavorful, colorful, and well balanced, often with ingredients that tasted local. Breakfasts eased us into the day, while dinner was comforting and satisfying. The meals left me feeling energized, calm, and cared for. You could tell thought had gone into the food as part of the retreat, and eating there felt healing. Staying at the center was an experience I'll remember. If mindful, nourishing food matters to you, the meals alone are worth the visit.

I went to Mahakala Center for a yoga retreat and found it peaceful, with beautiful views of the sea and landscape. The rooms were comfortable and clean, and the food was fully vegan, healthy, and delicious, with care given to the ingredients and presentation. The resident cat was a lovely calming presence and always around for a cuddle. You can walk to the beach, though the way back is quite steep. It's a lovely natural setting to slow down and recharge.
