Hotel Grand Jade

I paid $40 for the first room, which faced inward with its window looking at a wall. There wasn’t a desk chair, so I couldn’t work there. I switched to a $60 deluxe room with a city and port view, and that room was very nice and clean, though the bed was a bit hard. The rooftop restaurant had a nice breeze and a good view, but I didn’t think much of the food.

I’m speaking only from my experience as someone in hospitality. I was looking to stay for five nights in August, during the very rainy, bad-weather season, when there were almost no tourists in the city. They said themselves that they had only a few guests. The room was $12 a night. I offered $9, then said I could do $10 at most per night for the five nights, $50 total, and that I didn’t need the room linens or towels changed. They took it to the manager, who said definitely no. From a business point of view, I think they could have accepted.

The sea and city views are good, but the Wi-Fi is far too slow for laptop work. I couldn’t even check email. Management should improve it, since many service company staff stay here and need a stable, decent connection to work.

The rooftop dining lounge was amazing. I had dinner there both nights and loved the food, especially the crab, which is a must since myeik produces so much of it. The rooms were pleasant and had a nice view over the city. Staff were really nice and quick to answer questions. Jade Flower Tour agency has an office right in the lobby, with a range of day trips so you can choose which islands to visit.
