Euro Guest House

We spent our first evening and day in Malta chasing a receptionist who kept vanishing and wouldn’t answer the phone. There was no water all evening, so even the toilet in our room wouldn’t work, and the Wi-Fi was useless. When we arrived, nobody was at the supposedly 24-hour reception. A random man came from a room on the second floor and showed us a different room from the one we’d paid for, with no balcony and different beds. Don’t waste your money here. I’d give it zero stars if I could.

Charles at reception was a lovely person, full of useful advice and always keen to help. We were glad to meet him. The service from everyone was excellent, and the staff were friendly. The rooms were clean and cozy, breakfast was nice, and the hotel is in a great spot. I’d happily recommend it.

We’re still trying to get Booking.com to resolve this, but the guesthouse now says we’re lying, claims it never promised a refund, and says we left without telling anyone. It’s our word against theirs. When the day receptionist eventually arrived, they apologized, said everyone would be reimbursed, and told us we could leave and still get our money back. The door card system supposedly had a problem, so we had to ask reception to let us in with a master key each time. The first wait was 15 minutes. The next was three hours, in the middle of the day, with nobody at reception answering any of their phone numbers. Other guests were stuck too, and everyone was angry and trying to sort it out. We found the receptionist drunk and asleep in a guesthouse room. When we woke him to ask for the key, he could barely speak. The high rating hides how bad this place was for us. Save your time and money, and stay somewhere else. It’s not worth having your holiday ruined.

The owner tried to raise the eco tax during our stay, but we paid the amount shown on Booking.com. I’m convinced he was trying to scam us. The room itself seemed okay at first, and at least the AC worked, but it was never cleaned during our six days there. We had to check ourselves in because nobody was at reception. Our room card was accessible to anyone, and we nearly lost it. The hostel’s front door needed a code, but no one gave it to us. We called the 24-hour reception five times over six hours, with no answer, and once they hung up. We waited more than three hours until other guests came out and shared the code. Over the next few days, we gave it to four other groups in the same situation. We also checked whether reception was reachable in case we lost our card. We would have been left sleeping outside that night. Don’t stay here if you want a good trip to Malta. This hostel could ruin your holiday.
