We stayed in Apartment 9 last week during a family holiday in Mauritius, and the arrival was a shock. The balcony door was ajar, used sheets were left drying on the rack, and the washing machine was full of things. It felt like we’d walked into someone’s home unannounced instead of checking into a paid reservation. When we asked, we were casually told the previous guests had left those things to be cleaned or dried. Basic items you’d expect in a regular B&B were missing: washer fluid, toiletries, salt and pepper, and even some cooking oil. Each room had just one full-size towel, and they were worn out. We tried calling the owner to talk it through, but she argued that our expectations were atrocious. We were travelling with our elderly parents and already exhausted from the journey, so finding somewhere else wasn’t an option. There was no compassion. Instead of offering compensation, the owner suggested we find another place to stay and said she would “try to refund” us. That wasn’t much of a guarantee and felt like she was avoiding her responsibility as a property owner renting out the place. It was a very poor stay. Thankfully, Mauritius itself, the beaches, and the food helped make up for the uncomfortable experience at One Bay Residence - Apartment 9.
