La Margarita

The room upkeep was poor. The sheets were stained, the bathroom hadn't been cleaned properly, and there was visible grime on the shower glass and outside it. The cleaners came by each day to sweep, but left the beds unmade. A dead roach sat in our bathroom for three days, and we could hear rats or mice scurrying and squealing in the air vents. The hotel is listed as two stars, but that doesn't seem accurate. It's in a very noisy area, with dogs barking, traffic, and a neighboring workshop making it hard to sleep. Staff seemed disinterested. The cleaning staff spent time chatting and using their phones instead of cleaning. The food was disappointing too. Meals were served in an open area that wasn't clean or comfortable. Breakfast was a random selection of fruit that wasn't fresh, pastries, and pancakes if you were lucky. Supper was an odd mix, with little consideration for vegetarians or guests who avoid certain meats. I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

The staff were the best part of our stay at La Margarita. They were friendly and went out of their way to look after us. If we arrived after dinner while on half or full board, they would save food for us, which we really appreciated. The food itself was good, with tasty, balanced Mauritian dishes, and a fresh menu posted at reception each morning. It's a small, budget-friendly guesthouse in Pointe aux Piment, with clean, well-kept rooms and grounds. The beach is about a five-minute walk away. Parking was easy, with a few spaces in front and plenty next to the containers beside the hotel. There are a few house rules to know: smoking isn't allowed on your private balcony, so you have to use the designated area downstairs. Visitors can't come into your room and can only meet you in the common area, which can be messy because of the many bird nests. You're also expected to leave your key at reception whenever you go out. The rules take some getting used to, but the warm service and Mauritian food made La Margarita a lovely choice.

The meals were a highlight, with buffet dinners on some nights and a choice of two dishes from a menu on others. The staff were really friendly, and I had a great stay. It's a quiet, relaxing place. Being in the north doesn't cut you off from the south if you rent a car, most places around the island are about an hour away, though traffic can be bad.

A quiet spot for a break or a stay with friends. The rooms and pool were very clean, the service was good, and the local food was amazing. Breakfast and dinner were included. The beach is within walking distance. They lent us a kettle and two cups for tea or coffee in the room, and the TV had local channels. I'd recommend it.
