The dinner was the low point. We sent the whole meal back because it was inedible, which has never happened to me in decades of travel, even though we’re not fussy diners. The pool looked good in photos but wasn’t clean, and getting towels and cushions took around 20 minutes because one staff member had to carry all four sets alone. The staff were genuinely kind and tried hard to help us, and the hacienda itself is striking. The rooms are large and beautiful architecturally, but uncomfortable, with windows set about two meters up and no views. There wasn’t really anywhere peaceful to unwind. At $500 a night in such a remote location, Hacienda Temozón didn’t come close to the standard I expected. I’d read glowing reviews and found myself wondering whether many of those reviewers had actually stayed overnight. We had reserved three nights, but left after just one, early the next morning, feeling we’d wasted our time and money. I’m grateful to the staff for their hospitality, and they’re easily the best part of the property. Now that IHG has taken over, the place needs serious investment to reach genuine luxury standards. Otherwise, it should be presented as a much less expensive, rustic “authentic charm” stay for people willing to give up comfort. Temozón can’t become a true “must-stay” destination in between those two standards.

The staff made us feel part of the local community, even during a short stay. Rudy was an attentive waiter, Cindy at the front desk was lovely, and Neidi, the hotel’s longest-serving employee, brought so much warmth and experience. The food was gourmet, beautifully served, and fairly priced. Service felt on par with the Ritz-Carlton, Six Senses, Regent, and Kimpton. Our room was enormous, at least 1,000 square feet, with high ceilings, vintage decor, and an outdoor jacuzzi. It felt both grand and cozy. The property has the atmosphere of stepping into the 19th century, with modern comforts thoughtfully added. I also felt very safe here, more so than at any other place I’ve stayed in Mexico. This fulfilled my dream of what a Mexican hacienda stay could be. Calling it magical almost undersells it, it’s one of those rare places I think people should experience in their lifetime. A wooden path around the grounds would help older guests get around and make it easier for staff to move about. It would also be wonderful if guests could visit the two cenotes on the property.

The facilities are a little worn, but still have a lot of charm. The food was amazing, and the little snacks at turndown were such a sweet touch. The location worked well for us, and the staff were so wonderful, like staying with a gracious family. Such a cute place. We’re coming back.

We stopped by the restaurant and enjoyed it, then asked if we could look around before deciding whether to book a stay. They wouldn’t let us see the property, even though the hotel had no guests at the time. That felt very unusual, since plenty of other places are happy to show you around. The grounds also looked run down. Half the fountains at the entrance weren’t working, and the place could use a fresh coat of paint. There are better alternatives.

I haven’t stayed here yet, though I hope to someday because the property is beautiful. I came for lunch and had a gorgeous view of the pool. The meal was out of this world, with Yucatán dishes and flavors, all made from scratch, even the corn tortillas. I started with ceviche, had poc chuc, then finished with chocolate cake and cinnamon ice cream. I couldn’t have asked for a better meal. I’d recommend the restaurant if you have a vehicle. The resort is quite remote, and that’s the only downside.
