The best thing about the place is the canyon view, and it’s also right by the train station. It feels like they know guests have few alternatives, though. We paid over $250 a night, while the roughly $190 advertised rate apparently only applies if you reserve by phone. Booking online, even on their own site, added more than $50 per night. The room felt worth maybe $60. Nothing seems to have been updated since the hotel was built in the 70s. Our TV didn’t work, there was no hair dryer, and there was no internet in the room despite the advertising. Service was awful, apart from one lovely waitress. We sat alone in the bar for an hour without the bartender asking what we wanted. Paying by card anywhere means going to the office because there’s just one nonportable terminal. Nobody had change either, so we couldn’t pay cash or even leave the housekeeper a tip. Breakfast portions were big, but the food was mediocre and choices were scarce. The “orange juice” was powdered. The coffee bar didn’t open until 1pm, despite the menu saying 7am. The hotel is rustic and has a phenomenal view. If you like dogs, bring treats for the friendly, skinny street dogs.

From the balcony, you can take in Mexico’s Copper Canyon, and that view alone felt priceless. We also liked being able to unplug, so having no TV or Wi-Fi suited us just fine. The rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. We joined a canyon walk, and our guide was attentive and knew a lot. The hotel is only a short walk from the El Chepe train and about ten minutes on foot from Parque de Aventuras Barranca del Cobre. There’s a bar and dining room with striking canyon views, and the food was good. Staff were kind and attentive, and the service was excellent. There was a Raramuri market outside with lovely handicrafts. I really recommend staying here.

We spent five nights here and enjoyed every minute. Most visitors seem to be passing through for just a night or two, but we were happy to stay longer. The rooms were clean, the staff friendly, and the chef was great. Martin was a terrific guide. We love dogs, so it was fun having our new amigos follow us on the two-mile walk to the adventure park. The hotel is right next to the train station, and the photo is the view from our room’s balcony.

Liz, Tomas, Yair and Edgar were wonderful, and the service attitude was outstanding. They kept looking for ways to help us. The setting is just as impressive, right by the canyon cliffs with a breathtaking view, and literally across the street from the train station. For an overnight stop while traveling on Chepe Express, it’s a great fit. Staying longer gets trickier, depending on what you enjoy. There aren’t many activities nearby, so you may need to book tours similar to those available in Creel or repeat the same walks. The views are amazing, so another walk isn’t bad, but it doesn’t feel like a new, exciting thing each day. The restaurant has a set menu, with only one or two choices each day and fixed dining times. The bedrooms are simple, which could be fine, but the beds are very hard. You can also hear footsteps from a neighbor upstairs as if they were in your room.

The rooms were okay, and most of the staff were lovely. Still, it’s the location that makes this hotel. I stayed here 25 years ago and finally got to come back. You really can’t beat that view, perched right at the canyon’s edge.
