Hotel Baluartes

We took a quick trip to Campeche together. The hotel is within walking distance of Centro, and the food nearby was decent. Oxxo is just a couple of minutes away on foot. The place is older, but the rooms are well cared for and the maid service was outstanding. The pool is a nice size and the hotel provides towels. The bar was closed. There is access for people with disabilities. The Public Market is a bit farther, but still walkable.

The location was the main thing going for it: we could watch the water show each night, and it was close to both the malechon and the walled city. Otherwise, I'd rate it two stars. The hotel needs repairs, the night receptionist could be friendlier, and a second elevator needs to work. We had to miss one night because of unexpected difficulties. They didn't refund us or offer credit for another stay. That was their prerogative, but a credit would have been a nice gesture.

I don't understand how this place got a four-star rating. There weren't any towels in the room, and it wasn't comfortable. None of the staff spoke English, which seems like it should be a priority if they want to see tourists. The bathroom sink was broken and wouldn't drain, and the room smelled moldy. If you have no other option, you could put up with it for one night, but I wouldn't stay longer.

The location and all the parking space were the only real positives, though the parking area needs maintenance too. The hotel feels rundown, like it might have been abandoned for a long time. Maybe it was lovely back in the 70s, but that time has passed. There were holes in the wall with wires sticking out beside our headboard where the outlets should have been. The toilet wouldn't flush, but they fixed it right away after we told them. The shower drain was blocked.
