Hotel Cristal | Cancun, Mexico The postcard-like view and throwback feel were the main draws for me. Hotel Cristal has that 1990s Spring Break nostalgia, and it’s definitely not a modern glass tower. I liked its retro charm, even if the place feels dated. The location is what makes it work. White sand is just steps away, and the clubs are close enough to walk to, while far enough away that you don’t hear every bass drop of “Mr. Brightside” at 3:00 AM. The view is lovely, and if you plan to get out and see the ocean and city, it’s a winner. Inside, the decor looks much as it did when Titanic was in theaters. Old tiles and furniture have seen decades of sunscreen, and the curtains may be 30 years old. Still, the hotel is clean, functional, and unpretentious. The staff keep it spotless, though I’d eat my chilaquiles from a plate, not the lobby floor. Even a budget-friendly place like this doesn’t escape the rising cost of Cancun. A casual taco dinner nearby costs what a steak dinner used to, so keep an eye on your pesos. The hotel is good value for the area, but if you need a rainforest showerhead and a smart mirror, this won’t suit you. My score: 7/10 for the views, 10/10 for the cleaning crew, 4/10 for the old curtains.

The constant noise by the Mandela Club made our stay miserable. The hotel moved us to a ground-floor room in another tower with a garden view of the ocean, but the club right beside it played loud subwoofer beats day and night. Our windows were shaking. We complained, and the hotel said there were no other rooms available. Room service was awful too. Requests were forgotten, and my T-shirt left in the first room didn’t come back until our last day, after three attempts. We’d booked last minute because of the location and spectacular ocean views, but the first room they gave us in tower A had two separate beds even though we’d specifically requested one. Its toilet shower was overflowing. Reception initially said they couldn’t change us until the next morning, but the manager arranged another room immediately when I went to see him. The hotel seems to have real management problems. I’d tell anyone considering it for a location or ocean-view deal to understand why the price is low, since there are better options. The sargassum situation in Cancun and nearby areas seems mostly out of control, though people in the hotel zone are trying to manage a losing battle. As of late May 2026, other beaches in Tulum were just unbearable because of the stench.

We had a really good meal at Los Velas. Chef Miguel put a personal touch into the food and made cuisine we love, even though he didn’t know our preferences. We were impressed. Justo served us very well too. I’d definitely recommend them.

The hotel didn’t live up to its photos or ads at all. It looked modern, clean, and luxurious online, but in person it was dark, very dated, and poorly maintained. I stayed Thursday through Sunday, and it was one of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had. The halls had cracked walls and holes, and the rooms looked old and unclean. There was mold in the bathroom, a damaged-looking, outdated mirror, and tiny bugs on the bed. That was concerning and unacceptable. Although it was advertised as all-inclusive, it didn’t feel that way. The bar didn’t open until noon, and both bars and food service closed by 11 PM. Breakfast was exactly the same every day with little variety. At check-in, nobody gave us a list of the resort’s activities or entertainment, so we didn’t know what was available. This wasn’t worth what I paid, and I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

The beach is only steps away, there are several restaurants available to guests, and we really enjoyed the pool. I’d recommend the all-inclusive option. Las Vegas is a recommended restaurant here, and Eugenio was a friendly server at our dinner. The staff were efficient, warm, and welcoming to my family. I’d recommend staying here, 5/5 for sure!
