The photos didn’t show what we actually got. There was dirt and dust everywhere, and I was the only person in the building, with no guests or staff around. A shirtless guy who didn’t speak English gave me a quick check-in, then disappeared for days. It turned out he lived in the same room where I slept. There were bedbugs and cockroaches, and a strange smell. One morning, building noises woke me because something was going on upstairs. When I went to look, I found a toilet full of old urine that smelled disgusting. This was the worst stay I’ve ever had.

Lucia and Geraldo were super friendly and gave us great food recommendations. The rooms and bathrooms were very clean, and our private room for two came with two towels and two soaps. Having AC made a big difference. Breakfast was small but enough to get the day started, and I’d recommend the place to backpackers. I’m taking off a star because the shower pressure and comfort weren’t great. The electricity also cut out sometimes for about an hour, though it wasn’t a huge problem.

I stayed for two and a half weeks and enjoyed it. The staff were really nice and helpful. The rooms were fairly clean, as were the shared bathrooms. Of the three bathrooms, only one had a window, but they were still good. Breakfast was included, with toast, fruit, and coffee or tea. Since it’s downtown, shops and restaurants are nearby, and the bus stop for the Hotel Zone and beaches is a 15-minute walk away. The ADO center isn’t too far either, though I wouldn’t walk there with a lot of luggage or a suitcase.

The AC worked really well, the TV did too, and breakfast was included with fruit, toast, and good coffee. The neighborhood was quiet, but dirty and covered in graffiti. It’s close to the ADO terminal and El Centro, and the staff and volunteers were pleasant, though not especially hospitable. Our shower had no hot water, and the sink drain leaked onto the floor. Maintenance was poor all around, and the mattress was old, saggy, and stained. It didn’t feel like good value for the money.

After my wallet was stolen, I missed my connecting flight and ended up in Cancun with no cash. My girlfriend sent money to a bank for me to collect, but it was Friday night and the banks were closing or had already reached their daily withdrawal limit. I’d already taken a taxi, expecting to pay with that money. After three banks turned me away, I called the hostel to ask if they could help. They told me to come by and see what they could do. They covered the taxi and gave me a bed, and when I managed to get the money from the bank the next day, I paid them back. The staff were super friendly and took great care of my dog, who was traveling with me. There’s a good kitchen, the cleaning lady does a great job throughout the day, and the location is great. Despite what a lot of comments say, the beds are good and there are no bedbugs. I recommend it to anyone who wants to stay outside the busy Hotel Zone or is traveling with a dog.
