Nílu Cancun Downtown by Selina

The worst hostel stay I've had, despite having stayed in many around the world. The room was extremely hot and smelled strongly of mold and damp, and there was no remote for the air conditioner. Nobody showed us around or told us which bed was ours. There are no bed numbers, and the lockers aren't labeled either. On my second night, I found a man asleep in my bed, on top of my things. I felt unsafe and completely disappointed.

The location made getting around easy, just a minute from the bus station, with restaurants nearby and a nice market next door. For the price, we felt we got a lot. Our room was clean and comfortable, with a small balcony and complimentary shampoo and shower gel. It was cleaned every day, and, unlike some other hostels we've stayed in, there was no mold. We also loved the pretty pool area and the friendly staff. The kitchen has a clever mirrored layout, so several people can cook and use it at once without getting in each other's way. We had a great stay and would happily recommend it.

The front desk guy was very kind, which was a bright spot. I'd loved staying at Selina before, but the new owner means there's no Cowork now. The place feels run down, the photos are definitely old, and the kitchen smells. There was a beeping noise all night, the bed and pillows were uncomfortable, and I barely slept. The shower was cold, and there was no water in the room. The room I booked was supposed to have a coffee machine, but there was no coffee. The app listed $50, but local taxes somehow brought the price up to $80. I'd give it 2/5, though I'm trying to be nice. I hope the new owner takes this feedback and improves things. The place also has stagnant energy.

There was no wifi, and the lights stopped working. Then at 2am, two people started banging aggressively on our door and used a key to come into our private room. They left quickly when they saw us inside, but staff had no explanation the next day for why those people had a key to our room. My friend and I were terrified to leave afterward, and we won't return.
