Posada Chichen Itza

The hostel was filthy, and local people kept coming into the backyard to smoke weed all night. Our room only seemed to lock from outside, so two random guys came in during the night and asked to use our toilet. The AC was either blasting cold or off, with no way to set the temperature. Turn it off and the room got boiling hot. I'd never stay here again.

There were 24 guests sharing one toilet and shower, and towels and bedding were inadequate. The rooms were cramped and dirty, showers were cold and constantly leaking, and there was no hot water. Mosquitoes were everywhere. Security was poor, check-in and checkout times weren't enforced, and guests arrived in the early hours. The owners partied until 2am most days, while building work on site carried on until 9pm. The backyard was shabby and badly maintained, and clean towels were hard to get. Several taxi drivers couldn't find the hostel, whose phone number couldn't be reached by non-Mexican citizens. It wasn't five minutes from the beach as advertised, and there was no sign outside the building. There were hidden taxes too. The owner was rude, obnoxious, and unfriendly. Very poor experience, avoid this place.

Breakfast was okay, but the bathrooms were dirty, there were no clean towels, and the bathrooms smelled horrible. The staff also made it difficult when we tried to reach the manager or owner, even threatening to call the police to remove us. We felt the hostel was advertised as closer to the beach than it really is. More seriously, staff got into our belongings and stole money. Daniel, one of the people who greeted us, took $400 in advance, promising to book trips to Chitzen Itza and Park Explorer, then disappeared. We couldn't get help contacting him. It seemed badly run, with responsibility spread across a group rather than one owner or a small company. Don't just walk away, run.

The service was very attentive. There isn't a sign, just a house door marked number 26 at the very end of the street.
