We were on a boat and ate at the restaurant on the beach. The town is tiny but beautiful, right on Mexico’s coast. Beyond that, there isn’t much unless you go a few miles to the Pueblo. From a boat it’s lovely to look at, but there’s not much to do besides relax. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but when I travel I like to swim, visit towns, and have a few diversions. If you’re happy spending time on the beach or by a hotel pool, it’s a beautiful spot.

Careyes feels magical, from the architecture and colors to the food and sounds. It’s the most romantic place I think I’ve ever visited, and an experience of a lifetime. We wanted to visit the beach for our 30th anniversary, but weren’t allowed access. Beaches in Mexico are public, yet there was no way in unless we paid the exorbitant day rate. We’ll never return.

HEAVEN on EARTH..! Careyes is a community, not a town, so you have to contact the Careyes concierge and rent a house. A four-bedroom house with a pool starts at around $2,000 USD per day, but the service is incredible. It’s like a 5 star hotel, only better. Fly into Manzanillo instead of Puerto Vallarta, it’s closer. The best time to visit is November to April. The rest of the year is rainy season.
