Jáalk'ab Cabañas

The beach is only a few steps away, and they have kayaks and bikes for getting out to explore. We had a wonderful, relaxing three days at Jáalk'ab Cabañas near Puerto Progreso. The staff were attentive and gave us helpful tips about local food and transportation. A great mix of rest, nature, and adventure. I’d absolutely recommend it.

The late checkout fee caught us off guard. It was 450 MXD, and nobody had made that clear when we checked in. Otherwise, the staff were helpful with the bikes and gave us games to play. The rooms had some fun details, especially the big conches used as taps. The mosquito net around the bed looked romantic, though it got a bit annoying. The restaurant across the road was great, and the nearby beach is beautiful.

We had a great stay and would happily bring the family back. The cabins are roomy, clean, comfortable, and well equipped, with a nice bed, plenty of outlets inside and out, and Wi-Fi that worked well for remote work. There’s Netflix and other streaming on the TV, plus a temazcal that runs on scheduled days and can fit a large group. Staff were friendly and lent us beach chairs and an umbrella. They also have a little trolley for taking luggage to the cabin without dragging it through the sand. Parking was plentiful, safe, and convenient. The pool was a little cold but clean and still pleasant. The bed net kept out any mosquitoes that might have got inside, though I didn’t see any in the room. There were plenty outside, but repellent kept them away.

We paid $800 pesos, or $40 USD, for one weekday night in a two-bed bungalow. Using the AC costs another 200 pesos. The person who greeted us was really nice. I’d checked out a few nearby hotels and felt they were overcharging. This was the nicest of the places I saw, and also the cheapest. The bungalow had internet, satellite TV, a microwave, a small fridge, split AC, plenty of towels, bed nets, and screens on the doors and windows. The pool area is open and lovely. It’s very quiet on a weekday, though I imagine weekends could get a bit noisy with kids playing.
