The Explorean Selva Maya Kohunlich

Staying in the jungle was a unique experience, made special by the all-inclusive setup and the daily tours. The historic monastery tour in the jungle was especially worth recommending. Coming back each afternoon to the refreshing infinity pool and drinks was great. Unforgettable!

The pool is big, a lovely temperature, and easy to enjoy. It's also a nice touch that they bring coffee to your room in a basket early in the morning, and there's always bar service by the pool, so it's easy to relax. The nature and well-organized excursions are part of a great all-inclusive concept. For the price, though, the place fell well short of expectations. The hotel is quite old, and the restaurant, lounge, and reception are the only areas that are unkept. The rooms are in bad shape, with termite-infested wood, and the roof leaked badly onto the balcony when it rained because of huge holes. The restaurant food was very average too. You can have a good time here, but keep your expectations in check.

Our little bungalow was perfect, and I spent far too much time in the hammock ;) We're used to big resorts, but this 40 room place blew us away. Everything is close and easy to get to, there was always a table at the amazing restaurant and a lounger by the pool, and both the food and service were fantastic.

We loved our six-night stay at the Explorean Kohunlich. The all-inclusive covered every excursion, with amazing service and food and a different menu each day. The guides knew their stuff, were courteous, and drove very patiently. We went on four of the six planned trips. At Chakanbakan Lagoon, we kayaked in the evening and at night, saw howler and spider monkeys, and heard incredible jungle sounds. The kayak trip to the beach area at Lake Bacalar was beautiful, and the freshwater lake's colors rivaled the Caribbean ocean. In the Magical Town of Bacalar and the Blue Hole Cenote, we found the fort's history of the real Pirates of the Caribbean interesting. The best part was relaxing in the Blue Hole Cenote with our life vests and enjoying the water and nature. At the Archeological Ruins of Kohunlich, the site was well preserved because it wasn't attacked by the Spanish during the conquest, and the stone masks still have some original pigmentation. The rooms were very nice, and the bed was comfortable, but they could use some refreshing. Some furniture was in poor condition, and the shutter doors sagged. Instead of adding braces, they cut the bottom of the doors at an angle so they would close. The front porch sitting area with its hammock was a nice touch. The pool area is great, but needs more loungers for guests returning from excursions. They could easily double the number and add at least four more umbrellas. We loved the stay, food, drinks, and service, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure instead of just sitting at a resort. The newly paved roads made the excursions easy to reach, except where dirt roads were needed. Bring repellant and sunscreen. We didn't have any mosquitos, but we were there in the mosquito off season.
