The location is pretty good, but I wouldn’t recommend staying at Casa Bertha. We booked a double room and were shown one with three bunk beds instead. The room and bathroom smelled unpleasant, and there were no windows or other ventilation. It was between the main corridors and stairways, so we could hear people whenever they came or went.

The room was just right, and the location was perfect. My two cousins and I stayed for three nights, and we fell in love with both the place and Gunajuato itself. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed so warmly, and the staff were incredibly helpful.

The rooftop is the one comfortable spot in an otherwise claustrophobic building. There’s no ventilation or outside-facing windows, and the rooms feel awful. The beds and bedding were bad, the bathrooms were bad, and the smell was the worst part, a heavy mix of mildew and urine. The carpet looked at least 30 years old and probably hadn’t been cleaned. Still, the location is good, and the owners are very friendly. If you get the roof terrace room, or you’re traveling alone and desperate to save money, it could be a decent option.

The owners went out of their way to help, and the three-bed room was very affordable. One of the friendliest hostels I’ve ever stayed in.

I’d booked a shared room, but they “upgraded” me to a private one. The owner was friendly, and the location was the best. There’s also a rooftop terrace with an awesome view.
