It’s a reasonably priced hostel in a convenient spot, with a social atmosphere, friendly staff, and decent breakfast. It does the job, but I wish I’d known a few things beforehand. The WiFi barely works in the lobby and doesn’t work in the rooms, and it’s loud, so bring earplugs. The snorkel tour we booked through the hostel wasn’t bilingual. I understand we’re visiting a Spanish-speaking place, but it would’ve been good to know, especially since it was obvious we weren’t fluent. One day, we came back and found that our ceiling fan had mysteriously been removed. It wasn’t a terrible stay, but it had some quirks.

The rooms are spacious, but I definitely don’t recommend this place. There are no safety precautions at all on the upper beds, and I spent the whole night watching how I moved so I wouldn’t turn over and fall. On the lower beds, you can’t sit up straight. WiFi was almost nonexistent, the bathrooms were old, and the service was unfriendly.

The location is great, which is probably why this average hostel does well, but it’s expensive for what you get. The rooms were only averagely clean, the staff could be a bit rude, and the showers didn’t work at all.

The hostel’s name suggests friendly, but the staff I met weren’t. The first receptionist seemed completely uninterested in helping me, though the second was a little better. The place is run-down and basic, quite different from how the pictures present it. The sign outside advertises a bar, solarium, yoga area, and other things, but when you look around, some aren’t there and others look like leftovers from a construction site. The WiFi was poor and unreliable in the rooms, and really only usable at reception. There was no atmosphere, and nobody used the pool. I bought a 120 pesos dinner promo for a beer and burger. A woman named Camille, I think, tried to sell me two burgers for 240 pesos as if it were a deal, even though one burger cost exactly half that and included a free beer. When I paid, she said she had no change and asked to keep 30 pesos as a tip. Asking for a tip was incredibly rude, especially 25% on a 120 peso burger. I asked her to repeat it because I couldn’t believe it, and she asked again. I said no, but she kept 20 pesos anyway and gave me the rest of my change, which showed she had change all along. Then she tried the same trick on an older man who came after me. Even though nobody was around, loud music played all night and carried into my room. It was so loud I couldn’t rest, listen to my own music, or watch TV. You can hear everything in this hostel, and the sound seems louder on the upper floors. At 2am, a group of Dutch people woke me with a loud conversation downstairs. No staff stepped in, so I had to handle it myself. Breakfast is served from 8am to 10am. At 9.30m, while several of us were getting cereal, they ran out of milk and refused to bring more. When I asked why, a curly-haired woman ignored me and walked away. I was shocked. There were still 30 minutes left, and they let guests keep filling cereal bowls without telling them the milk was gone, which seemed incredibly cheap and wasteful. This is by far the worst place I’ve stayed in Mexico so far. The staff weren’t friendly, and it felt like they cared about money more than guests. There are plenty of better places on the island, so avoid this one.

This was the worst hostel visit I’ve had so far. We’d paid for 3 nights for 2 people, but transport problems on the night before our stay meant we didn’t make it to the island that night. I emailed the hostel manager to explain, but got no reply. When I checked in, I asked if I could use the third night by myself, but was told only the manager could decide. A few hours later, I returned to speak with the manager, only to be told she wouldn’t be around. I explained again, but they refused to let me have that third night as one person, saying the manager had said “no.” I wasn’t surprised. A manager who’s content with a hostel in that condition clearly doesn’t care about guests. It was the most run-down, dirty, and broken hostel I’ve stayed in for a while. I’d strongly recommend skipping it on a trip to Isla Mujeres.
