We really enjoyed learning about the region's history, including the country's religious persecution known as the "Cristiada." Hotel Gralta, in Jalostotitlan, makes a great base for exploring Los Altos de Jalisco. The town is nicknamed "Jalos" and has a small-town feel, quite different from nearby San Juan de los Lagos. The church, plaza, and restaurants are about a seven-minute walk away. We mostly had breakfast at the hotel restaurant, where the food was good and the service was great. In town, Mi Pueblo serves great meals and drinks. Ask if you can see the restaurant's Bodega and Tower. La Finca de San Antonio is also nearby, so there's wine tasting too.

Lola's Restaurant was disappointing too, with a 30+ minute wait for food and dishes that came out overcooked. My latest visit to Hotel Gralta was a letdown. The room was dirty, with hairs in the bathroom and shower, plus a dry contact lens left behind. Not what I expected.
