Hotel Museo Matan Kaan Mahahual

The location was good, and breakfast was average. In the room, though, the towels and bed linens were stained and badly washed, and we found a cucaracha and various insects. That may be fine for the place, but there were huge gaps under the doors leading outside and to the balcony. I didn’t dare open the balcony door. The first time we tried the shower, green water came out.

The staff were AMAZING and friendly, and I think they’re struggling 😓. Sadly, the place is rundown. It must have been amazing at some point. We had no hot water during either of our two nights, and the pool stayed out of service until the day we had to leave. We asked for two double beds but got one double and two singles.

The rooms are surprisingly roomy, with firm beds and locally made honey shampoo and soap. The Italian-villa style gives the place a lot of character, and it feels like there’s potential for something special. The fixtures aren’t luxurious, though they’re fine for the price. Parking was a concern for me on a motorcycle. They advertise it as free, but it’s street parking rather than a lot. The manager kindly let me leave my bike near the front door, off the street. The staff weren’t rude, but they didn’t seem especially invested in the job, so don’t expect a warm welcome at check-in or breakfast. I’d stay again since I didn’t have a bad experience, though better management, staff incentives, and a few upgrades could make a real difference.

The price was cheap, and our room was big and clean. There are lots of different decorations, each with a story behind it. I’ve been traveling for two weeks and stayed at three hotels, and this one has had the best staff so far. After breakfast the kitchen was closed, but I wanted hot water for tea. The woman at the front desk was so sweet and brought some to me in one of the patio areas. I’ll definitely stay again. Thank you, staff!
