There aren't enough heaters for the cold rooms. I gave my small single heater to a couple who were freezing. The traffic noise can wake you at 5am, there's no breakfast included, and the furniture is old. If you want to shorten your stay because of these problems, the pricing by length of stay feels like a clever way to penalize you. The owner doesn't take American Express, possibly because of the protections it offers buyers. Compared with similar places, this should cost a tenth of the price. I've been coming to Oaxaca for six years, so I have comparisons.

The location is hard to beat, just a few blocks from Alcala, the main pedestrian street in Oaxaca’s Centro Historico. Casa Murguia has five lovingly decorated rooms around a beautiful swimming pool, and it’s clean and very well maintained. Mary Jane, the owner, is a wonderful host and knows a lot. I’ve stayed here twice and will definitely return. I also went bird-watching and horseback riding with Mary Jane at her place outside town, and had a great time. It’s one of my favorite places ever.

After a day out seeing the sights, the exquisite pool is a great place for Happy Hour. Trees and flowers surround it, making for a refreshing break before an evening in Oaxaca. Casa Murguia is a private green oasis in the historic district, a short walk from the town’s best museums, markets, and restaurants. Its three room suites are spacious, spotless, and homey, each with a large private patio. They’re designed with local artisans in mind.

We make our annual trip to Oaxaca with Casa Murguia as our base, from November to mid-December, for about six weeks. My husband and I have been coming as active customers since 2008. Give it a try and you’ll see why we keep returning. Cheers, Elisa.
