Hotel Barrio Latino

The free parking came in handy since we spent a lot of time exploring. From the hotel it’s an easy walk to the beach, food, and the ferry to Cozumel. The staff were helpful and friendly, and our room was clean and well maintained. There’s a nice outdoor bed at the back and a quiet shared spot where you can read, eat takeout, or unwind. The straw ceiling does let bugs in, including a few cockroaches we saw. Also bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper, since the bar next door plays music late. That’s not the hotel’s fault. Even with those issues, we had a positive eight-day stay, and the location, service, and value would make me book again.

The smell in room 17 was awful. When I asked the receptionist to come check, he immediately insisted it smelled fine and there was no issue. He even said I might be sick, instead of trying to help. He offered no alternative and claimed the place was fully booked, even though it looked nearly empty. A really bad stay. I’d avoid this place.

Manuel at reception made me cry. I’d prepaid for the room, but was told about a cash fee I hadn’t known about when I arrived. I didn’t have cash, and he belittled me until I was in tears. It was the worst customer service I’ve ever had, and I don’t usually write reviews. Avoid this place.

The toilet stopped working twice during my one-night stay, and the room’s curtain doesn’t cover it fully, as the picture shows. It was also very noisy, right in the middle of the party district. If you want to sleep before 3 am, pick another hotel. I’d told the hotel that a friend would arrive at 10 the next morning for a quick shower. We ended up arguing for 40 minutes about a $15 extra charge and what the house rules meant. Terrible experience.
