IRIS Studios & Apartments

I spent a month here and really enjoyed it. The modern building has a great rooftop pool and sits in a nice local neighborhood. Being a few blocks farther from the beach and the very touristy area meant things were relatively quiet, which suited me well. I’d recommend it to anyone visiting Playa.

The room looked clean and tidy at first, and the location was decent. Check-in was quick and easy, and when I called the number listed online because I couldn’t find reception, someone got back to me quickly. They were also responsive whenever I had a question or issue. Still, I don’t think the stay was worth $50, maybe $20. Monthly rentals in Playa could be better value, and WhatsApp and Facebook groups are useful places to look. There were roaches in the kitchen cupboards, and after finding them in two cupboards I was too anxious to inspect the rest. At night, scratching and running sounds came from the walls, most likely a rodent, though I can’t say whether they have a rat problem. The AC worked but the temperature wouldn’t adjust; it was freezing at night, and switching it off didn’t work. It stayed that way until checkout. I was exhausted after the roaches and noises and just wanted to leave, so I didn’t tell the staff during the night. I hoped they might offer another room once I reported the infestation, but unfortunately there was no compensation. The bathroom water heater was unreliable, and so was the water pressure.

I spent six days in Playa and stayed at Iris Studios. The apartment was tidy and had everything fitted out well, and the rooftop pool with its little waterfall was charming. The owner was pleasant and quick to help. Shops and services are close to the center, and 5a Avenida is about a ten-minute walk away. Buses to the airport and other destinations are easy to find. I’ll definitely return.

EDIT: If this is in the same building as Sumatra 2, I’m sure I reviewed the right place. Google shows both at the same address, and the photos look like the same building. Maybe it’s listed under two names, or they’re separate buildings with different names. Either way, the penthouse unit had ants and was dirty and outdated. It needs major work. Don’t waste your time renting it.
