After I got home from my trip, I discovered Gran Sahara Playa del Carmen had charged me roughly $700-$800. I'd booked a six-week stay through Trivago, where the listing clearly said free cancellation. I cancelled well in advance because I found a better deal elsewhere, and thought that was all taken care of. I contacted management, but they blamed me and refused to refund anything. They made no effort to look into it or find a compromise, and the customer service was no help. It feels misleading and unfair to advertise free cancellation and then charge guests hundreds of dollars anyway. I'd strongly advise future travelers to avoid this hotel and save their money. This kind of charge, followed by dismissing a guest's concerns, is unacceptable.

Mr Waffle is a great cafe right across the street, with an excellent menu. The location is close to Avenue 5 but far enough away to stay quiet. Our room and bathroom were super clean, and the staff were welcoming and friendly. Fantastic service!

The building and courtyard are beautiful, and the place is clean and central. I'd recommend it for a short stay or a longer one.
