We spent a week here recently and liked the quieter, laid-back atmosphere across the resort. Our room was clean and modern, and the beach was lovely, though it was a bit wavy with a red flag on two days. Music stayed at a comfortable volume, barely audible on the beach. The food was good, but breakfast had no gluten-free options. We especially enjoyed the Mediterranean, Tropical, and Mexican theme nights. Bamboo was our favorite a la carte restaurant, and we went twice for excellent food and service. The restaurant staff went out of their way for us, and the coffee bar was wonderful, with non-dairy milk. The bartenders were skilled and friendly. We also enjoyed the early entertainment, especially the Mariachi Band, and saw The Lion King play.

We stayed eight nights at the Azteca and had a good vacation. The grounds were beautiful and kept immaculate throughout the day, and there were always plenty of beach chairs. Sargassum is always around and gets especially bad on windy days, but this hotel cleaned it daily while the neighboring Riu and Allegro were rarely cleaned. Pool loungers go quickly in the morning, so people put towels on chairs. Food isn’t allowed on the beach or by the pool. The rooms are dated but clean, and the beds were comfortable. We were on the top floor and requested a dehumidifier, which helped a lot with cooling the room and reducing the musty smell. Food was average but plentiful. We were both sick during our stay, unfortunately. Toward the end of the week, staff seemed to be disinfecting the tongs and tables more. One staff member said they track illness, another said they don’t, so we’re unsure.

The hotel was lovely and well located in the safe Playacar community, about a 15-minute walk from 5ta Avenida. We had a great stay, but the dinner at the resort’s Mayan restaurant Xul-Ha is what made it memorable. The food was wonderful, especially the ke-keen main, and Leodany, Iván, Eduardo and the rest of the team were kind and gave impeccable service. We went three times in one week and can’t wait to return.

The spa was wonderful. Marina was attentive and gave a great massage, and most waiters and service staff were kind and helpful. The resort architecture is beautiful, the beach is nice with lots of chairs, and the beds were very comfortable. Rooms could use an update, though, and the room itself was just okay. Food was mostly disappointing, except on Latin and Mexican themed nights, when choices were tastier and more plentiful. Pool music was mostly lounge and house all day, while the poolside activities lacked variety and engagement. Visiting the nearby Azteca Maya is a nice perk. For the price, the resort was okay.

A small, quiet hotel with a lovely clean beach, not far from the airport. It’s good for families with small children, and the staff are very friendly. The rooms were clean but a bit dated. In summer, the buffet was unbearably hot because it has no air conditioning. We like hot weather, but couldn’t sit there even ten minutes. Guests can also visit sister hotel Viva Maya, a 20-minute walk away. Maya is bigger, with nicer landscaping and a larger buffet with more variety. We stayed at Viva Maya the following year and liked it much better than Azteca.
