Puerta Vieja Hostel

Breakfast and dinner cost 50 each day and tasted amazing. The staff were fantastic and there for us, especially Temo the bartender, who made our time here better. Such a good vibe and a unique offering. One of the best hostels I've ever stayed in. Recommend 100%.

I enjoyed my stay at Puerta vieja hostel. The food is very good for the price, and there are several activities to choose from each day. The rooms were cold and damp, though, which wasn't pleasant. I also feel I need to raise a serious concern about the horse riding tour offered through the hostel. The horses were much too small for the riders, and all of them looked incredibly tired. Some had cuts on their legs with flies sitting on them; others had sores and bald patches from ill-fitting saddles and bridles. None were given water during the tour. At the end, another girl and I had to give them our own drinking water because they were severely dehydrated and exhausted. We were disgusted to see the same horses being used for the next tour, still without water or food, with minimal shade and recovery time. I understand that animal standards and beliefs can differ between cultures and countries, but this treatment shouldn't go unnoticed. I believe the hostel should step in to stop it, and at the very least shouldn't endorse the company running the tour.

The place was really social without feeling like too much of a party hostel. Cheap breakfast and dinner options were a big help, and the activities were lots of fun, especially cocktail night and salsa with Temo. They did run late, which was a little annoying, but it was fine. The rooms were clean and the bathrooms good, though getting the shower temperature right was a bit difficult. I had an amazing, fun stay.

The atmosphere made this one of my favorite hostels. It feels like a little world inside, but step out and you're right on the main road. I met loads of cool people, and it's easy to socialize. The food is really good and cheap, and the location works well.
