The staff are wonderful and the resort itself is beautiful, but prices have shot up tremendously compared with what we’re used to. I’d strongly suggest avoiding food and drinks from the coffee shop, pool bar or restaurant, and Javiers. There are plenty of very good, much more reasonably priced places directly across the street from Cabo Azul. Beware of the huge price increases.

Cabo Azul is a beautiful, luxurious five star resort in a great location, within walking distance or a short shuttle ride of everything in San Jose del Cabo. We’ve been coming for years. The rooms are spacious and very clean, the property is immaculate, the staff are kind and accommodating, and the service throughout is amazing. Food at Flor de Noche and Javiers is delicious. The infinity pools are among the biggest and nicest around, and the pool loungers are the most comfortable EVER. Since Hilton took over, though, the food and drinks have become outrageously expensive. The mixed drinks are barely alcoholic unless you tip the bartenders a lot of cash each day. The pool rules have become ridiculous too. You can’t even bring a cup of water, bottled water, or a drink you bought at the on-site market. I hope they change both the pool rules and the prices, especially since the bartenders put so little alcohol in the drinks. With a few changes, this could be a true five star experience.

The kitchen in the room is handy for keeping snacks or making a meal if you want to cook while on vacation. The rooms are modern and comfortable, and the infinity pool was spectacular. There are activities for the whole family, and the resort has everything you need on site. From check-in staff to the room attendants, everyone pampered us and made sure we were cared for. I’d recommend bringing slippers because the granite floors are cold. Highly recommend.

The policies around the pool are especially frustrating. You can’t bring your own drink, even if you bought it at their on-site store at a very steep markup. Drinks from the pool are weak and usually cost about twice what they would anywhere in SJD. Food is also roughly double the price you’d expect elsewhere, though it is very good. Guests regularly leave pool chairs “saved” for hours without using them, and nobody seems to manage it. There are nice parts of Cabo Azul: the rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable, the food is very good, and most of the staff are friendly and professional. But the resort feels rigid and not very guest-focused, with rules for everything and almost no flexibility. You can’t use a towel to block the sun so you can stay out longer, and you can’t adjust the sun shade yourself; you have to ask staff. The excessive rules, weak drinks, high prices and lack of accommodation take away from what could be a great resort. It feels like they just want our money without delivering the quality. I wouldn’t rush back. HGV Zihuatanejo is significantly better all around.
