Ilo Rojo Hotel Boutique San Miguel de Allende

We stayed at the wonderful Il Rojo on a recent trip to San Miguel. The staff were lovely, and the hotel was beautifully kept. We also enjoyed drinks, food, and sunset from the rooftop. It’s close to the center, and I’d highly recommend staying here if you get the chance.🍷

The entrance is really steep, but I had a great stay. The room and bed were both huge, and the AC gets super cold. I’d definitely stay here again.

The room was a real bright spot: spacious, modern, stylish, and spotless. We also loved the breathtaking view from the restaurant. Getting to the hotel was a struggle. It sits on such a steep hill that Uber drivers wouldn’t go up, so we had to walk up a steep ramp equivalent to six stories just to reach reception. Then it was another climb of three stories, followed by one flight back down to our room. There’s no elevator, which felt like a glaring omission for a 4-star property. We had to haul our luggage along this route too, and half of it didn’t even have a ramp for a trolley. We hadn’t expected that kind of workout at a 4-star hotel. The open-air restaurant was scenic, but there was no indoor seating. Breakfast and dinner outside meant dealing with wind, cold, and sometimes harsh sun, which took away from the meals. We were also disappointed by how inflexible the staff seemed and how eager they were to upsell us. The hotel was almost empty, yet they asked for 1000 Pesos for a room with a view. The room we were first given had such a bad view that its windows were fogged to hide an unsightly tall wall right outside. They also wanted 500 Pesos for us to use an idle projector in the restaurant, even though we were the only guests there. Finding that the fire alarm was missing from our room raised serious questions for us about safety standards and protocols. Those issues and other similar experiences left us feeling unwelcome, like targets for aggressive sales instead of valued guests. The room and restaurant view were impressive, but the drawbacks took a lot away from the stay.

The restaurant was delicious, and our room was huge, comfortable, and super clean. Wonderful hotel, definitely recommend!
