Hacienda Ucazanaztacua

We had a really nice Sunday lunch here, and the location is lovely. The restaurant service was good, though I had to ask our server for the same thing several times. The food was just okay, especially for the above-average prices in Mexico. Honestly, it feels like you're paying for the view.

The hotel is a bit far from anything, but the lake and gardens around it are beautiful. We were the only guests in January, and it was too cold to really use the outdoor facilities. The place is nicely designed, with original art throughout. Breakfast was generous, fresh, and homemade, and the other food was fresh too. Our room was small but functional, with two huge picture windows. The A/C kept it warm, and there was plenty of hot water, though the shower had a problem. The owner and staff were very nice and accommodating.

The views across the lake to the Island of Janitzio were phenomenal, and the food was terrific too. The pool is heated in the cold season, and the service was great. If you're in or near Patzcuaro, I highly recommend staying here for a couple of nights.

Several days after we booked, they emailed trying to charge us five times the published rate we had reserved. They canceled when we wouldn't accept the new price, even though we'd already booked our rental car and flights. The amount they wanted was over a thousand dollars per night, far above the rates shown publicly. You can't rely on these accommodations to honor your registration, and they may try to charge you more before or during check-in.
