I had booked my last three nights in Tulum at Nunum because I like nature and thought the cabins might be a good step between camping and a more standard, luxurious place. I left after two nights to find somewhere else. Mold and stains were immediately visible on the sheets and covers. One pillow was black with mold, and the whole room felt cold and very damp. Gaps between the floor planks and the stick walls made it seem like forest bugs could get in anywhere. The three-digit door code was 000, and they didn’t have a key to change it. Kenia the owner assured me the place was safe, but I still wanted to lock up my things when I went out. There was a safe in the room, but it had been locked and out of service for a long time, so I used my suitcase for storage. There was no hot water for a shower. I can usually handle a cold shower in Mexico, but this one was outside, dark, and already chilly. My first night wasn’t quiet, and the room was so cold and damp that it woke me at 7:00. The thin sheet and blanket weren’t enough. At 3:00AM, I came back to find a 10cm cockroach on my pillow. The bathroom area was infested with them too. Cockroaches could crawl in through the floors, walls, or window door, and I was sharing the room with all kinds of bugs. There was mold on the roof, walls, pillows, sheets, and wood. At night, traffic on Tulum Ave. and loud music from nearby bars and clubs made the place noisy. Birds woke me at 8AM, squawking so harshly they sounded like chickens being murdered. Thin white fabric over the windows let in too much light. The dampness and lack of insulation made the room cold, and the bed felt wet when I got in. There was no hot water at any time. They said the system only worked in sunshine, but the water was still cold when the sun was out. There was nowhere to store clothes, though leaving them in a suitcase seemed safer from the insects, damp, and mold.

The tent next to the biocenote had an amazing view, and the whole place was even prettier than the photos, with a romantic feel. On arrival, we got a welcome bag with homemade natural bug spray and incense, and got to pick a handmade soap. The minibar had tequila and wine for purchase, plus coffee. There were plenty of outlets and the bed was super comfortable. Everything was thoughtfully detailed, and everyone was welcoming and helpful. We adored our stay. Only downside, we couldn’t stay longer.

We left Nunum Tulum around 10 PM after failing to reach any hotel staff, and went to another Airbnb to sleep. Three security guards arrived at 8:10 PM and kindly tried calling the manager for us, but he didn’t answer either. At the front desk there had been no staff, and nobody picked up the phone when we returned to find the room full of flying and crawling bugs. Large gaps in the wooden floor let them in. Even an ordinary tent would have kept them out better. The bio cenote was closed because of bacteria in the water, and there was no warm water, though the hotel promotes warm showers. We got no refund for those two main selling points being unavailable. It was also strange that we were the only guests. The next day, the front desk manager promised a full refund. We signed the refund papers and left. This happened in June, and by September we still hadn’t received the money. We tried contacting staff by email and Instagram, but they didn’t reply and even deleted my comments on their posts.

Even with a jackhammer and construction nearby, this place was amazing. The staff and the whole experience were top notch, and showing outside is the best.

The friendly staff, luxury glamping with all the amenities, and a stunning cenote made this a trip I won’t forget. It had a very Tulum-like feel that reminded me of the city’s golden age. One of the best trips I’ve taken. I’d give it 10/10 and would definitely come back.
