We arrived at 12:00 PM on 11th Jan 2026 and asked for an early check-in. The staff said the room would be ready at 3:00 PM. When we came back at 4:00 PM, an hour after the official check-in time, they suddenly said there was a problem with our room and they couldn’t host us. We had booked a month ahead, expecting the reliability of a recognized chain, so this bait and switch at Holiday Inn Tulum was deeply disappointing. They tried to send us to a sister property behind the hotel, with tiny, average rooms that felt like a 1-star hotel and were nowhere near what we’d paid for. When we asked to see the supposedly problematic room at Holiday Inn, the staff refused. It seemed painfully obvious they’d overbooked and were shifting confirmed guests to cheaper accommodation. They wouldn’t help us get a comparable room at the hotel next door, or refund us on the spot so we could arrange another place ourselves. We had to walk to the neighboring hotel and pay for a new stay out of pocket, and our entire day was wasted. Even after we asked for a refund, they still weren’t willing to give it to us.

We had two rooms, and the toilet in one wouldn’t flush poop. Help arrived after about 30 minutes, got it working for half an hour, then left. At 10 pm, after the next poop, it stopped flushing again. I called, but nobody showed up by about 10:30, so I told them not to send anyone. The AC in our other room also wasn’t working, though someone came and fixed it while we were at dinner. At check-in, we said we’d be leaving early for snorkeling and wanted to shower when we got back around 4 pm. They told us we could use the rooftop pool showers, then said that wasn’t possible when we returned. All in all, a forgettable experience.

We went three days without hot water. I asked the staff about it every day and got no information, refund, or suitable compensation offer. They charge USD rates but deliver below minimum service. Stay somewhere else.

The staff were friendly and accommodating, and gave us great suggestions for places to eat and visit. You’re also close to grocery stores and everything else in the area. We had a great stay. Thanks Sam and Antonio for all your hard work!

I spent a month here for a training and retreat in the rooftop palapa, while the hotel was changing from Selina Downtown to the Holiday Inn. There was some construction, but my single room with a kingsize bed and balcony stayed quiet. The rooftop pool was all ours, and I believe they planned to renovate the rooftop after our retreat. It should be beautiful, with views of the jungle and city. The hotel is also an easy walk from distinctive little clothing shops and good restaurants like El Cayuco, where I had fresh fish tacos. Fatima, Laura, Sam, and Mati at reception and in the office were attentive and wonderful. The workers, housekeeping, restaurant staff, and everyone else greeted us with a friendly "ola". I’ll always remember this stay fondly.
