Nuee Tulum

We had a good stay overall. The rooms were generally clean, the staff were friendly, and when we checked in at midnight they even carried our heavy luggage. The hotel is affordable and conveniently near central Tulum. Noise was the main drawback. There’s a nightclub right across the street, and the walls are thin enough that we could clearly hear the neighbors talking.

We booked five nights but left after two because we could barely sleep. Three clubs surround the hotel, including a men’s club, a karaoke bar, and another club not on Google Maps that shares a wall with the property. Music went on until the early morning. There are gaps in the wooden front door and it doesn’t close all the way, so the sound came straight in. Even wearing earplugs, we could hear and feel it. The Wi-Fi only started working after we asked several times, and parts of the kitchen weren’t clean. The shower was okay, the rooftop pool was nice, and it was convenient to walk to the Main Street and supermarket, but none of that made up for the lost sleep.

There were a couple of positives: one service worker was friendly, and the hotel provided extra-strong earplugs. They hurt my ears, though, and only helped me sleep a little. The price didn’t match the quality, and I felt better accommodated in a poor local area. At least three nearby clubs and bars played loud music until about 3 or 4 a.m. My sister wanted a restful holiday, and I needed to work on my laptop around 6 or 7 in the morning, so the noise left us stressed and barely sleeping. We asked to cancel the second half of our stay, but that request was ignored; we were moved to another room instead, which made little difference. The room wasn’t very clean: the towels were stained, the floor hadn’t been cleaned properly, and the toilet didn’t work right. There was a deposit, which I don’t think hotels in this price range or higher should ask guests to pay. Nuee seems to aim for a high-end look with nice accessories, but it felt like a cold concrete building in a noisy, dirty area. The photos don’t show what it’s really like. I’d only recommend staying here to people who want to party all night and don’t care about their health.

No hot water, and on our second morning there was no running water at all, so the toilets wouldn’t flush. A hotel worker came to apologize and offered several excuses, but nothing was resolved. The place was very dirty and noisy. A busy bar nearby played music that kept us awake, and the night desk workers were loud too. They invited friends to hang out in the lobby, adding even more noise. The pool was old, filthy, murky, and stagnant, with no filtration. The sheets had a musty, moldy smell that lingered while we slept, and the bathroom smelled of sewage. The showerhead was so dirty that water wouldn’t come through. The private pool in the king room was also nasty, with dirty, stagnant water. Who knows how many people had used it. Do not stay at Nuee Hotel. Yes Tulum! No Nuee!
