Casa Kaan

We stayed two nights and it made a great base for exploring Calakmul. The rooms were lovely, spacious, and clean, and the friendly staff served good dinners and breakfast. A really nice little jungle getaway.

The tours they offer were good, and the food was good too. We had a really nice stay, with a lovely room and friendly staff.

The food was lovely, and I wish we'd booked more time to see the other Mayan temples and walk through the beautiful forests nearby. The huts are charming and spaced well apart. From the photos, I hadn't realized how new and thoughtfully designed they were. They have wireless chargers, strong WiFi in the room and restaurant, and door seals to keep insects out. You can control the lights, fan, and air conditioning with Alexa, or use the regular controls if tech isn't your thing.

The staff were charming, the service was first class, and we had nothing to fault at Casa Ka'an. We were very glad we stayed here to visit the Calakmul ruins. The hotel is a group of cottages set in the forest. Each one is well away from the others, so it's peaceful, with dawn birdsong and only distant traffic from the main road, about a five-minute drive away. Our cottage seemed quite new and was well equipped. It had two bedrooms, one with a king-sized bed and one with two bunk beds, plus a bathroom and a large dining and living area with a TV, fridge, water dispenser, and cooker. You could cook your own meals if you wanted. Outside was a small covered terrace with comfortable chairs and a table. All cottages have parking. From the canvas-covered reception and restaurant at the entrance, it's a short drive or a five-minute walk to your cottage. The restaurant served excellent, good-value dinners. Breakfast was included, freshly made, and substantial, and they can prepare a box lunch if needed. Calakmul is the main reason to visit, but it's deep in the jungle, about a two-and-a-half-hour drive away. The ruins themselves are 60 km from the entrance gate on the main road. We took the excellent tour with Kaan Expeditions, which is connected to the hotel and run by locals, though you can drive there yourself. There are also several Mayan sites much closer to Xpujil, and well worth a visit. We went to El Hormiguerro, Xpujil itself, and Balamku, and were often the only visitors. We can fully recommend Casa Ka'an.
