Hotel Chaac Calakmul

The pizzeria in the same building serves delicious food at fair prices, and the caretakers are very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our two-night stay and would recommend it. The location is good, at the northern start of the main street, with parking on a side street in front of the gate. We were surprised that traffic noise didn’t carry into the rooms, though the walls are thin and you can hear people talking outside. Rooms are clean and have their own bathroom with a warm shower and air conditioning. The larger rooms with two beds cost 550 Pesos, while smaller one-bed rooms are 450 Pesos.

The pizza place beside the hotel is owned by the same person and makes it easy to get meals nearby. Getting around is convenient, too, with the bus terminal and taxi stop close by. Nice location, clean rooms. Highly recommend.

The family running this small hostal is warm and accommodating. They can drive you to local ruins: we went to Calakmul and the bat cave with Miguel on one day, then visited four smaller sites the next. As we were leaving town, he also took us to Kohunlich and dropped us at a colectivo so we could continue on our way. The rooms would benefit from better ventilation, but they had air conditioning. The beds were comfortable, Wi-Fi was good, and there was cable TV. The family’s mother learned from an Italian cook in Puebla, and the restaurant makes excellent New York quality pizza.

The room was comfortable and just as described, and the restaurant was decent, with great tacos. Omar gave us an excellent welcome, but the kind staff and helpful service are what really made the place stand out. Wish we could have stayed longer.
