I stopped at this charming hotel for tea and apple pie with cream while walking to Parit Falls in Cameron Highlands. The public rooms feel like a quirky old English country pub, with original features and architecture from when the building was made in 1937, during British colonial times in Malaysia. It feels like the real thing, rather than retro styling. Even the room key is a metal key with a numbered fob, kept at reception while you’re out, instead of a plastic card. There’s also a lovely English-style cottage garden, with plants suited to tropical highland conditions. The staff were helpful, and Mohan deserves a special thanks for telling me so much about Cameron Highlands, where he has worked all his life.

The scones were soft, buttery and wonderfully fluffy, especially with the homemade strawberry jem. They were the best I’ve had. Their homemade mango ice cream was sweet and refreshing alongside the tea. Smokehouse Hotel has a peaceful English-style setting in the cool Cameron Highlands, with friendly staff and attentive service. The front desk lady and gentlemen were incredibly friendly, and the uncle at the front gate kindly took our picture before we went in. All of that made afternoon tea a memorable treat, and I’d visit again. ☕

The outdoor garden, with its lovely flora and fauna, is beautifully maintained, and the decor makes almost every corner a good photo spot. It’s still a nostalgic place for me, too. I came back to The Smokehouse restaurant after 15 yrs, where my bf proposed to me in the garden. This visit was with my parents, aunt and husband, and the team greeted us and seated us at the main desk. The service felt attentive throughout. We’d eaten breakfast just an hour earlier, so we ordered only a few signatures for the elderly to try. I hadn’t expected bread before the meal, but I loved the fluffy bun with butter. The sautéed mushrooms were flavorful with either the garlic bread or bun. The grilled chicken had a strange taste, and I suspect it might have been frozen rather than fresh. The baked salmon was okay, but nothing extraordinary. I came for the scone and was disappointed: it wasn’t hot from the oven, and the butter wouldn’t melt on it. I’d asked for it after the meal, but it seemed they brought it before instead, so it had cooled down. The view and garden would make tea and scones a nice way to relax and spend time together if the scone were baked and served properly. I hope the food improves and lives up to the brand’s quality. Parking is easy, with some spaces opposite the restaurant.

We weren’t hotel guests, just stopped in for dinner, and the food was the most delicious we had in Cameron highland. The portions were generous, and the traditional British food was done really well. Highly recommend, and I’d come back.
