The hostel was otherwise nice, and the damp yellow marks in the room seemed typical for George Town. The real problem was the window: there’s no glass, only a wooden blind with holes, and the mosque is directly across from it. The call to prayer was unbearably loud, and even white noise didn’t make sleeping easy. I stayed around the corner last time in George Town and had no trouble, so the location itself wasn’t the issue.
The original window beside my bed was a lovely touch. I appreciated that the owner kept it, and it gave the room a sense of the old days while letting outdoor sounds come in naturally. I’m a medium-light sleeper, and the mosque next door can be loud. Very light sleepers might want to avoid it or ask for a downstairs room. The neighbourhood is quiet and still feels lived in, with families, old shops, and no traffic. Parking was easy with my own car. I was surprised Carnarvon 73 had become a hostel in just two years, so I booked right away. It’s clean and decent, and especially suitable for solo travellers. Check-in is self-service with a personal password for the entrance and room. Towels, a toothbrush, and slippers are provided. The bathroom and toilet are spacious, with strong water pressure, a bit too strong for me, almost poking my skin. Body shampoo, toilet paper, a hair dryer, and a full-length mirror are available. I’ll definitely return and hope the owner keeps running the place well.
A good self check-in stay, but remember to get the instructions from the booking platform or owner before arrival. The digital lock is handy, though it can take a while to detect and respond. Rooms and common areas are new, clean, well-designed, and maintained. The shared bathroom and toilet are spacious and clean, with a mounted hair dryer. The common area has a fridge, sink, cutlery, water refiller, table, and sofa. It’s well placed for walking to popular food and sights in Georgetown, with a public car park nearby. The owner responds quickly. Everything was just right.
My room assignment felt hit or miss. A ground-floor room without a window may be the best option if you want to avoid the continuous loudspeaker prayers from the mosque right next door. I could hear cars and bikes too, even a car security alarm, and professional earplugs didn’t help. The room is small, though I’m getting used to it. The AC is good and the Wi-Fi strong. You can hear the hair dryers from the room, and their pitch is high and goes on for a while. The water pressure in the shower isn’t good and hopefully they fix it. The person showering next to me hacked and spat, so I was glad I’d brought sandals. This is really more like a hostel, and I’m not a fan of shared bathrooms.
For a one-night stay, this was definitely worth the price. The interior was a pleasant surprise, clean and cozy, nicely designed with a local touch. My room was simple but presentable and well maintained, with great AC and a comfortable bed. There’s no private bathroom, but the shared shower and toilet were clean, ventilated, and had surprisingly strong water pressure. Highly recommend.
