GEORGE M.
I grew up in a hotel in Canada that my parents ran, and I’ve stayed in many hotels since, so I know the business. We picked Super 8 Georgetown Hotel for its location just outside the busy downtown and the hope of quieter evenings. Room 103 was basic, with no fridge, though the shower was adequate. I stayed four nights. The mattress and pillow were old and badly stained; I had to cover the pillow with a towel to use it. Each evening and night, fresh cigarette smoke came into our room through the hallway and bathroom vent. There was no way to stop it, and the smell was offensive. The hotel’s no-smoking policy clearly wasn’t enforced, and the smell seemed tolerated throughout the building. The air quality was poor at night. Smoking is a serious health and fire safety concern. Smokers can be careless with coals and cigarette butts, causing hotel fires, which is common knowledge. Avoid this hotel unless you’re okay trying to sleep with the stench of fresh cigarette smoke.
