The 80's Guesthouse

The shared showers and toilets were fine, and we could use a washing machine and clothesline. Reception isn't open around the clock, so check ahead if you'll arrive early or late. The only real annoyance was the thin walls. Someone next door had an alarm going from 6am for an hour, though that's not the guesthouse's fault. Our private room was basic but very clean, which we think matters most. The beds were super comfy, the bedding was fresh, towels were provided, and the air-conditioning worked well. Love Lane is a perfect location: the bars are a four-minute walk up the lane, far enough away that we couldn't hear them at night. We'd stay again.

The 80’s style decor really does fit the hostel's name, and it looks super nice. Rooms were clean, with a light and phone charging plug at each bed. Breakfast is simple and included in the rate, and you can refill your water for free whenever you like. A very nice hostel, highly recommended.

I loved having a dorm room to myself since nobody else was sleeping in the other beds 🫶. The main downside was people stomping around in the middle of the night on those 100-years-old wooden floors, with no self-awareness at all. When I arrived with my luggage, the staff didn't offer to carry it upstairs. It wasn't too heavy and I probably would've politely declined, but it still would've been nice if they'd offered lol.

Bayu on the day shift made my stay great. He's welcoming, funny, knows Penang really well, and always has great recommendations. He goes above and beyond for guests. The facilities could be better, though. I'd add towel hooks and bathroom slippers, curtains for the dorm bunks, and free coffee and tea. The water dispenser should work properly and offer cold water. The filtered water from the sink tastes like urine, come on now. The washing machine could use a fix too.
