A plus is the location, especially for Chinese food. The hostel itself was one of the worst I’ve stayed in. The dorms felt neglected and sterile, and every movement made an extremely loud creak. There’s no real effort to provide privacy. Hostels are usually good for their shared spaces and activities, but this one had neither, just a couch in the hallway and a chair on the roof.

The room and shared bathroom are basic, but clean and worth what you pay. The staff at Hornbill’s Nest were especially kind and welcoming. It’s great value, and I’d gladly stay here again.

The reception staff and room were good, but the toilets were very dirty. I also found a lizard stuck in glue on the window when I went to the toilet. There’s a message on the room wall about caring for the environment, so why kill harmless lizards this way? People come to Borneo to see its amazing wildlife. I managed to rescue one. And asking guests to put rubbish into extra plastic bags isn’t good for the environment either. I’m sure those bags don’t get recycled.

It was hard to sleep with all the noise from the rooms. They smelled musty, and the blanket was too thin and short to be comfortable. The air conditioning blew right at the bed, making it unpleasantly cold with such a poor blanket. The bathrooms were dirty and didn’t even have toilet paper.

The bathrooms are open air, so you can hear people groaning and grunting as if they’re right beside you. Ants were biting me in bed too. The place felt disgusting from the moment I saw the filthy staircase. The walls looked as though they’d never been cleaned, with all sorts of fluids and discharge on them. Is this a hostel or a house of horrors?
