Hotel Grand Continental Langkawi

Kuah town is the location, so it’s far from Chenang beach but close to the ferry terminal to the mainland. Hire a vehicle in Langkawi and you can explore the whole island. The hotel looks old at first, though the room had been refurbished and felt clean and functional. Breakfast was not bad for a three-star hotel.

We were exhausted after flying in, and ended up at reception with no sleep after leaving our room. I’d booked a superior room for three, but wasn’t given the room I asked for. The lobby was hot with no air conditioning, and mosquitoes were there and in the room too. The room was disgusting: the toilet door wouldn’t close, the bathtub was dirty and horrible, and the carpets in the hallways were stained. I was so angry and disgusted that I didn’t take more photos of the room, though I had photos of bites and other issues. I called agoda to cancel, then waited hours for them to sort it out and refund our money. The hotel management seemed uninterested when I raised the problems. One staff member really went out of his way to help, and I appreciate him. I feel sorry for him, having to work there and get bitten by mosquitoes too. The management should be ashamed of how they run the hotel and step down if they can’t manage it. My girlfriend, mum, and I were very disappointed.

The staff did more than expected to make us comfortable, and the classy, relaxing atmosphere was lovely. I slept like I was on a cloud, and the fine dining restaurant exceeded expectations. A perfect stay from beginning to end, worth every penny.

The pool was okay, but the rest of the hotel felt musty and old, as if it stays afloat on airline cancellations that send guests there. Our room smelled somewhere between mold and an open sewer. Breakfast was edible, though not enjoyable, and sent me rushing to the bathroom.
