Rock Mountain

The pool was so dirty, and the bathroom smelled strongly of chlorine. My friend ended up vomiting and couldn’t open her eyes.

The pool needed better cleaning: there were insects and frogs, and the slide didn’t have enough water running through it. A water feature for the slide and a play area for toddlers, especially ages 1-3, would help. The beach-style look has potential, but dirt and insects around the property took away from the relaxing feel. The décor also seems aimed at just one group of guests. A simple, modern minimalist style could appeal to more people. Getting there felt unsettling. The hotel is reached by a short private road through palm oil trees, and at dusk it gets very dark and a bit scary. Since it’s away from town, there are fewer breakfast choices and things to do. The court wasn’t maintained, and there was no information about activities, even ones that might cost a little extra. The cafe wasn’t open to guests and seemed unfinished. A basic working cafe with halal food, breakfast vouchers for guests, and a range of cuisines for dine-in customers could be useful and attract locals. At reception, a place to leave luggage during check-in would make things easier. I also saw dogs on the grounds, apparently for security, perhaps because of the plantation or farm. It’d be better to keep them away from the hotel and parking area, while letting them stay elsewhere on the property, so guests feel safe and welcome. Finally, a lift or help carrying luggage to rooms would make a real difference. I hope these suggestions help improve Rock Mountain Hotel.

We were 30 people on a two-day, one-night family trip, and the rooms and facilities were up to our expectations. I booked directly with the owner, Mr. Wilson, who was helpful and quick to respond by phone. Breakfast was included and he arranged it from a nearby food stall: nasi lemak, mee, mihun, toast, assorted kuih, watermelon, coffee and tea. The kids swam from day into the night, and we had our own steamboat dinner in the shared area. Evaporative coolers kept the space comfortable and cool. A relaxing spot for a big family gathering.

It’s a peaceful place for a retreat, and I liked it. The facilities are good, though the pool was dirty. They provide a kettle but no tea or coffee in the room, which seemed odd, and the air conditioning wasn’t cold. It clearly needs maintenance.
