Hotel De Gaaper

Even though the weather was cold and rainy, our room was comfortable and warm. It was cleaned daily, and the coffee and other supplies were replenished. We arrived early, and our room was already ready. The staff were welcoming, friendly, and professional, which gave the hotel a personal feel. Breakfast was delicious and good value, with lots of sweet and savoury choices in a cosy, attractive café overlooking the square.

The staff member at reception was friendly and helpful, and our room was quiet enough even with a crowd outside. We stayed in a clean, pleasant studio with a small kitchen and coffee maker. The city centre location made it easy to get to many interesting spots in Amersfoort. It was a perfect place to stay. My only concern was the plants in the room, which looked nearly dead and as if they hadn’t been watered in a long time :)

The square can get noisy on warm evenings, so bring decent earplugs. I’ve stayed at De Gaaper three times, and each visit has been great. It’s basic, but for the price I can’t complain. Everything has been clean and worked fine each time, and the staff have been friendly and efficient in that usual Dutch way.

We booked a Comfort Plus room, but most rooms are actually in the building next door to the nice white one in the pictures. Ours was three flights up in the attic, with a small window facing the square that you had to stand by to see the view. The hotel gives you earbuds, and we needed them because the nightclub stayed open until 2:30am. Service was poor too. Even when you arrive early, they don’t try to get you into a room sooner. Nobody gets a room before 3 o’clock. The rooms are ready for an update.
