Joli Bergen Hotel

We were four adults, including two people well over 80, and chose to stay despite my first impression on arrival. The smell of boiled potatoes and fish made me want to turn around. Free parking was available, but it meant a 300-meter walk, which wasn’t workable for the older members of our group. We could park on the hotel grounds for €25.00 for the whole stay. The spaces were very tight, especially P6, where a large tree and various bushes made parking difficult. After that first impression, we had a very pleasant stay with our dog. The beds were excellent, the bathroom simple but clean, and the TV had tons of channels. Both breakfast and dinner were good. The hotel’s surroundings were great, with a large off-leash area for the dog. Bergen is a nice town, though a bit posh, and it reminded me of Bloemendaal. When I got home, I noticed a fairly large scratch on the car, from squeezing into the tight space with bushes alongside it. I wasn’t happy about that.

We won’t book this hotel again. It didn’t feel especially welcoming to German guests, and I found the response when we raised our concerns disrespectful. The welcome speech, evening events, information folder in our room, and notices around the hotel were all in Dutch. We only got an information sheet in German on arrival day. When we mentioned the language issue at reception, we were told, “When I travel abroad, I familiarize myself with the local language!” The food had some good points, but little variety. Breakfast was good, though the same cold cuts and cheese appeared each morning; the fresh, warm croissants were excellent. Dinner always offered the same choices: two salads, one with cheese and one without, plus one fish dish and one meat dish, with potatoes or pasta on the side. There was also confusion about drink menu surcharges, especially for shandy, and no one seemed to know the details. A hotel guest fell while showering and suffered painful bruises. At checkout, nobody from the hotel helped with luggage or anything similar. We visited three Enjoy Hotels in Germany last year, and all were excellent. We don’t recommend this hotel.

The rooms are small, but tidy and clean, and the staff were very friendly. I enjoyed the good food and plentiful breakfast. Not understanding the language at events didn’t bother me at all as a German in the Netherlands. The location is great, with everything within a 40-kilometer radius easy to reach and the sea just around the corner. I’d highly recommend the hotel. We stayed Friday through Tuesday on full board. The food was adequate for a three-star hotel, and if you want more, you have to pay more. Our room and bathroom were decent, though the worn mattresses could probably do with replacing. On Saturday, the market had a wide range of cheeses and really good kibbeling (battered and fried fish). There’s also a pastry shop just around the corner that meets the highest standards.
