It’s a lovely spot by the river, which makes the poor service such a shame. We waited half an hour and had to ask twice for a menu. My hot chocolate was watered down, and by the time the waitress finally seemed to wake up, we’d already decided to leave. The food prices were crazy too.

The beef in the maaltijd-salade was so tough it was hard to chew, and the mussels in the large dish they brought to the table were all dead and stinky. We paid a lot for that specialty, despite the poor quality. Service was terrible too. Not worth it at all, and I wouldn’t recommend the restaurant unless they take guests’ advice seriously and improve things.

The room was clean and fine, though a little dated, especially the bathroom. There’s no reception, so check-in happens through the restaurant, where the staff were really nice and helpful. The restaurant and food were excellent, and the chef was great. We also loved the terrace overlooking the canal and ferry.

Walking from Arcen to the restaurant along the Maas and taking the river ferry to Broekhuizen made for a really picturesque little trek. It’s doable, and that might be useful for someone planning a visit. We had a wonderful three-course meal during our short holiday nearby. The food tasted and looked better than I expected, and the service was so friendly. Our waiter spoke perfect English and German, but still agreed to use slow, simple Dutch so we could practice. That added a lot to the evening and left my wife and me with a lovely memory.

The view over the Maas was awesome, and the weather was so good I almost want to give the hotel credit for that too ;) Everyone was professional and very kind, though we didn’t catch all their names. Annemarie supervised the roomservice, and Susan and Ciel looked after us in the restaurant and bar. We had a wonderful stay at the Maashotel, with a warm welcome at reception, great rooms, and delicious meals. Everything was perfect.
