We had a five-bedroom house for ten backing onto a lake, with a small boat and a decent garden. The holiday park feels like an established village, with brick villas, and is in the Netherlands just over the Belgian border, under two hours from Calais. There’s a small pool, but we also had easy access to a sandy beach. We went in the second week of July, when it was popular but not too crowded. Cadzand and the beach both have good cafes. There’s plenty on site: a small supermarket with fresh baking each morning, ten-pin bowling, mini golf, pedalos, a Kids Club, and play areas. We tried the restaurant overlooking the lake and thought it was fine. Finding the site entrance was tricky. The villa had only two toilets, which I worried might be an issue for eight of us, but it worked out.

The beach is close, and some villas sit right on the water with a private pier and rowing boat. The park looks well kept, with housing options for groups as large as ten adults. We enjoyed our stay despite a few things that need attention. There was damp and mould in the showers, which could become a health concern for sensitive people. For our group of nine, there was barely enough cutlery and crockery. The dining area felt cramped, especially with a bench along one side of the table. The fridge was small, leaving little room to chill drinks. Cleaning could be better too: the windows were stained and the floor wasn’t properly clean. Our advance online grocery order was incomplete, although it was delivered to the door. The local shop had a good range of beer, wine, and fizzy drinks, and the bakery offered plenty of fresh rolls, bread, and pastries. The prepared BBQ and gourmet dishes were well catered for, with decent sized portions.

The place was very dirty when we arrived. It was meant for eight people, but felt cramped right away. The fridge was broken and, if we were lucky, could hold food for three. The small microwave combo oven wasn’t enough to cook for eight, and it had no instructions. All the markings on the dials had been cleaned off, so even Google didn’t make it easy to figure out.

The park is beautiful, the accommodation was great, and there’s lots to do. Wi-Fi was very good. The guy who played soccer with the kids was great with them, and the staff at the service point, supermarket, and bar were friendly and helpful. Check-out involved a lot: mopping the floor, stripping the beds, putting the sheets inside the pillowcases, and taking out the trash. We already have our hands full then, and for this price I wish those jobs were handled by the cleaning service, as they are at similar hotels. The kitchen also had too few utensils, and some weren’t good. There wasn’t even a decent knife, unlike what I’ve experienced at Center Parcs. At the kids’ club, the manager insisted on leaving the TV on even though it was just me and my kids there and I asked to turn it off. It distracted them from drawing and painting and other activities. His only explanation was, “we always keep the TV on.”

The vegan dish at the restaurant contained eggs and milk in its sauces, even though I have allergies. Only after I asked them to check for animal allergens did they say they serve non-vegan sauces under the vegan label. Their explanation was, “being vegan is not being allergic, vegan will not develop symptoms from eating non vegan!” I was in shock. On arrival, we had to make our own beds, and towels cost extra to rent. At around 300 euros a night, they could have provided them. Half the bedroom lights didn’t work. Check-out meant cleaning and stripping the beds too. You can find better places to stay for this price.
