Bastion Hotel Dordrecht Papendrecht

I booked a trip for my coworkers, and dealing with the hotel was a nightmare. I've been asking for an invoice by email for three weeks with no response, and for four weeks I've been trying to get clarification about the charges, also with no reply. On top of that, funds were blocked twice and still haven't been released. The service and communication were terrible.

Martijn deserves five stars from me. He was the only one who explained everything, stayed polite, said goodnight, and answered all our questions. The room was nice, though a table would have made it more convenient to eat in. We had to ask for cleaning, and the tag outside the door didn't make a difference, so some days we came back to an uncleaned room. The staff were OK. It's a nice hotel, but some things could be better.

The rooms were spacious, cleaned daily, and the staff were friendly and professional. There was also a huge parking lot, and otherwise everything was good. The food was the one downside: it was expensive for what we got, with no good restaurants within an easy walk. The spare ribs and fish with prawns, at 22-23€ per meal, were dry, and the salads of shredded peppers, lettuce, tomato, and cucumber came without dressing.

The room smelled musty, almost like someone had been smoking in it, and the hotel is on an industrial estate with nowhere nearby to eat or drink. We were stuck with the bar and restaurant unless we took the bus back into town. The bar was OK, but nothing special, and the evening menu was so limited we couldn't find anything we wanted. Breakfast was OK, but at 17 euros per person, it's more than I've ever paid for breakfast, and I'm not sure I'd pay that again unless my finances changed. For what we paid for the room and breakfast, I'd call the hotel poor. I'd compare it to a travel lodge or, at best, a Premier inn, both of which I've used before without complaints about the cost. My wife booked online and made a costing mistake. By the time we came to pay, it was too late to find another hotel, since we didn't know the area. We weren't impressed, and next time we'll check the costs more carefully.
