Dijkhuisje

We had a wonderful week and will definitely come back. The owner was easygoing and communication was excellent. The cottage has everything provided, including excellent beds, though it’s simple and not luxurious. That suited us fine. There’s peace, space and a wide view nearby, and you just cross the dike to reach the seafront. We took long walks with the dogs and didn’t see anyone. Summer might be different. A car passed now and then. We’d especially like to use the hot tub next time, since it was too windy during our week, we thought.

We went home after just one night because the kitchen wood stove filled the whole cottage with smoke. The owner advised us to stoke it harder, which only sent more smoke from the pipe wrapped in silver foil and from the entire front of the supposedly fine, new stove. There were no smoke detectors, which felt dangerous. The hot tub stove was full of water. The bikes were great, but watch out: on the Batavus only the front brake works.

Everything was basic, so this isn’t a 5-star place, but we had a lovely week. The location is great for seeing the Western Scheldt, with beautiful rides along the dike as far as Antwerp. Ghent, Bruges and Middelburg are also easy to reach. The beds were comfortable, and the views from the dike were beautiful, especially with the big ships passing by.

The cottage is simple but has a good range of amenities, and the location is quiet, near the lighthouse. There’s an excellent mattress, a small but fully equipped bathroom, and a kitchen with everything needed to cook, including a dishwasher. In the garden you’ll find a hot tub, pizza oven, fire pit and BBQ. Bikes are in the shed, and the wide-open surroundings are lovely to explore on foot or by bike. Good value for the price.
