Herberg de Gouden Leeuw

The restaurant was the standout for us: a six-course chef's menu with wine pairings, delicious food, wines that matched beautifully, and some of the best service we've had. We also enjoyed a very comfortable bed and a tasty breakfast with plenty of choice. We stayed for two weekend nights with the cuddle package, which meant flowers, champagne and chocolates waiting in our cozy room. The town is lovely for a long walk; we passed windmills and a local brewery, then stopped at a nearby cafe. A great pick for a cozy weekend with walking or biking and really good food.

The restaurant was a highlight: a peaceful table, delicious food and attentive staff who made us feel welcome, dog included. Our room was in one of the historic side buildings, and getting there meant walking through the bicycle shed, which we hadn't expected. Inside, the ceilings were high and the decor was nice, but the whole room felt damp during our stay. Even the sheets, towels and toilet paper seemed moist. We'd probably return for the restaurant, though not for the hotel. 😉

We'd be happy to come back when the weather is cooler. The room had no air conditioning and got quite warm, and it was rather dark, though the bathroom was lovely and the beds comfortable. The old hotel and restaurant are charming, with a nicely done setup indoors and out. We enjoyed the coffee, dinner and lunch, and the service was pleasant. I asked the hotel to arrange flowers for the room, and they did a lovely job for a fair price. Great service!

The clock bells rang loudly twice every hour all night, so we barely slept. We hadn't been warned, and when we spoke to the receptionist, she confirmed the bells were a problem. We decided to check out, but the manager insisted the nighttime ringing wasn't his responsibility and charged us for two nights. We're very unhappy that he seemed to value the money more than the hotel's reputation. We should have been told about the bells. BEWARE THE ROOM WITH THE BELLS. We booked directly, and the room had seemed fine at first.
