Parkhotel Hugo de Vries

The room was overpriced and not worth even a star. The staff were rude and didn't listen. They gave us the wrong room despite my explanation, so I had to go back for the right one, and they never replied to my early check-in request. They also charged extra for the dog without showing how they arrived at the fee. The promised terrace and garden view weren't there. Instead there was a high fence, rubbish outside the back door including a tipped-over gas heater, no chairs, and no privacy. The so-called modern bathroom seemed like it might have been modern in the 1940s. There's no shower cabin or curtain, so water gets everywhere, and there was mold in a few corners. Someone had left hair on the hairdryer. When they cleaned the room, they didn't seem to like replenishing the sugar and coffee, probably to save a few pennies. The wiring may be bad too, because the lights dimmed when I turned on the kettle.

The rooms are basic and average, though comfortable, and the hotel sits in a beautiful area with lovely countryside and community around it. I stayed two nights for a work conference nearby, and there were weddings both nights. The first night was fairly quiet around the sleeping area and I managed to sleep. The next night, children ran screaming up and down the corridor for hours, then the adults kept making noise out there until 2 a.m. after the party ended. I slept terribly. I called reception and asked them to speak to the guests, but was told, "It's a wedding, there's nothing we can do." If you're there for a wedding, it's probably a great venue. If you're not, I really wouldn't recommend it.

We slept well in this lovely hotel even though a wedding reception was going on. The staff were courteous and helpful, our room was clean and comfortable, and the price was reasonable. We'll certainly come back.

The mattress was really saggy, the toilet needs disinfecting, and the rooms could use some fresh air. The windows should be able to open even just a little. The best parts were breakfast and the staff's smiles.
